IndiJam

Tired of playing convention 4/4 rythms to simple chords and melodies? Inspired by Indian classical music, IndiJam, is a new kind of practice and performance app for the mobile musician. It is based on a kind of sequencer known as a lehera, which is used by tabla players to practice complex rythmic patterns. The lehera contains over a hundred sequences (ragas) organized into a variety of rythmic patterns known as talas. The initial release of IndiJam provides beat patterns in groups of 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16 beats. Optional bass accompaniment marks the sub-divisions with the pattern, which is useful in learning these new beats. Start the lehera, adjust the tempo, and play along. Five sets of drums and percussion sounds are provided: darbukka, djembe, tabla, cymbals and effects, and a Western drum kit. The notes in the raga are displayed on the screen for the musician who wants to learn the melody or improvise along with the lehera.
Electronic leheras usually sound something like a harmonium. IndiJam uses an FM synthesizer to produce a wide range of timbres from pure tones to harmonically-rich sounds. Its range is sub-sonic to 22,050 KHz.
The sequence of notes defines the melodic structure of the raga. IndiJam provides a capability to create progressions of sequences. We call these progressions jams. Jams may contain the same raga (sequence) modulated up or down in pitch, or can contain different ragas from the same, or different talas. (Check out the examples in the demo on our website.) Jams are saved when the app is closed, so you don't have to start over each time.
